July 2022: “Room for Hope” and “Wherever You Go”

This month’s discussion of tracks from my latest album, Lake of Dreams, is discussing what I was thinking about while composing Tracks 11 (Room for Hope) and 12 (Wherever You Go)!  In writing this blog today, I find both of these tracks have a common theme of Hope for the future and being Optimistic.  In today’s world, that may seem somewhat naive and far-fetched, but we do have many things to be grateful for, even in the worst of times.

Track 11, Room for Hope, is a song about sometimes feeling a sense of desolation and hopelessness in our lives, but yet, then a glimmer of hope breaks through (in the piano and strings), reminding us to step back and see things from a different perspective…feeling a sense of gratitude for all the things we have had in our lives, and remembering that we all play a part in how the future turns out.  Like Emily Dickinson said:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
    Emily Dickinson

Track 12, Wherever You Go, is a a song that somewhat takes it feeling from a number of Bible verses (Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” ; Ruth 1:16 “Wherever you go, I will go”).  Although these two verses are about different events and have different meanings, I wanted to try to convey the feeling that there is no place or time or event that can separate us from the love of God (or whatever higher being you may believe in or not).  There is something very powerful and comforting in this thought, and we should rest assured that there is a higher Love that calls to us all, and we will never be or are truly alone.

I hope you found this somewhat helpful, interesting and entertaining!  At least from the viewpoint of ideas I was thinking about while composing these 2 pieces.

See you next month when I will have to start blogging about other ideas as that is the end of the Lake of Dreams album.

Thanks for listening and reading ;)
